There are over 900 Licensed Child Care Homes in Ventura County. Child care is provided in an individual's home. This type of care offers a small group setting for children that may be similar to their own home environment.
Family Child Care Homes can sometimes offer more flexible hours to match parents' schedules than child care centers. These homes are licensed by the State Department of Social Services and are reviewed at least once every three years.
Exempt from Licensing:
- Family Child Care Homes that provide care to one family in addition to operators' own children.
- Care and supervision by a relative.
- Cooperative arrangements between parents that involve no payment for care.
- Health and clinic facilities specified by Health and Safety Code.
- Certain recreation programs as specified by Health and Safety Code.
- Certain public and private schools.
Staffing Ratio and Capacity:
SMALL FAMILY CHILD CARE HOMES
Maximum Capacity (including provider's own children):
- Four (4) infants (or)
- Six (6) children, no more than three (3) of whom may be infants.
- Eight (8) children, if two are six years of age or older and no more than two of whom are infants.
LARGE FAMILY CHILD CARE HOMES
Maximum Capacity (including provider's own children) if the family child care home has an assistant provider:
- Twelve (12) children, no more than four (4) of whom may be infants (or)
- Fourteen (14) children, if two (2) are six years of age or older and no more than three (3) of whom are infants.
