Head Start is a federally funded program designed to provide an enriched compensatory preschool education to children before they enter kindergarten. Children between the ages of 3 and 5 whose family income is within the federal guidelines are eligible for the program. Each child receives medical, dental, nutritional, psychological and social services. These supportive services enhance the total growth and well-being of the child and increase his/her ability to participate more fully in the learning environment of school.
The Head Start program in Ventura County provides part-day and full-day center-based child care options, as well as family child care options. In addition, part-day and full-day state preschool options for 3 and 4-year olds are also available .
Early Head Start provides a comprehensive, culturally competent and developmentally appropriate program on a year-round basis to families with children under the age of 3 and pregnant women. This model provides early, continuous, intensive child and family development services in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards. The in-home visitation component provides support activities and service integration for families with infants and toddlers and pregnant women. The family child care component is designed to meet the needs of low-income families who are employed, entering the workforce, or participating in Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) related education or job training.
